چکیده

This work elucidates the manufacturing of lithium titanate (Li4Ti5O12, LTO) electrodes via the aqueous process using sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), guar gum (GG) or pectin as binders. To avoid aluminum current collector dissolution due to the rising slurries’ pH, phosphoric acid (PA) is used as a pH-modifier. The electrodes are characterized in terms of morphology, adhesion strength and electrochemical performance. In the absence of phosphoric acid, hydrogen evolution occurs upon coating the slurry onto the aluminum substrate, resulting in the formation of cavities in the coated electrode, as well as poor cohesion on the current collector itself. Consequently, the electrochemical performance of the coated electrodes is also improved by the addition of PA in the slurries. At a 5C rate, CMC/PA-based electrodes delivered 144 mAh ̈g ́1, while PA-free electrodes reached only 124 mAh ̈g ́1. When GG and pectin are used as binders, the adhesion of the coated layers to the current collector is reduced; however, the electrodes show comparable, if not slightly better, electrochemical performance than those based on CMC. Full lithium-ion cells, utilizing CMC/PA-made Li[Ni0.33Mn0.33Co0.33]O2 (NMC) cathodes and LTO anodes offer a stable discharge capacity of ~120 mAh ̈g(NMC) with high coulombic efficiencies.

Improved Mechanical and Electrochemical Properties of Artificial Graphite Anode Using Water-Based Binders in Lithium-Ion Batteries

In recent years, many studies have focused on the active materials of anodes to improve the performance of LIBs, while limited attention has been given to polymer binders, which act as inactive ingredients. However, polymer binders have amazing influence on the electrochemical performance of anodes. Herein, to investigate the binding performance between MCMB artificial graphite and the copper c...

Determination of Nicotinic Acid by Square Wave Voltammetry on a Carbon Paste Electrode: the Crucial Effect of Electrode Composition and Analytical Conditions

The foregone studies have shown that nicotinic acid cannot produce noticeable reductive signal at carbon-based electrodes without appropriate modification of the electrode. This is an obvious reason that mercury is known as the main electrode material for electro-reduction of nicotinic acid. In this study, it has been shown that it is possible to create a remarkable reduction signal for NA at a...

Binder-free copper hexacyanoferrate electrode prepared by pulse galvanostatic electrochemical deposition for aqueous-based Al-ion batteries

Copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) nanoparticles with tunnel-like Prussian blue structure were deposited on graphite substrate via pulse galvanostatic electrochemical deposition at 25 mA cm-2 with both on-time and off-time periods of 0.1 s, which presented the ability to intercalation/de-intercalation of Al ions reversibly in aqueous solution. The crystal structure of the as-prepared CuHCF f...

Mesoporous Li4Ti5O12 nanoclusters anchored on super-aligned carbon nanotubes as high performance electrodes for lithium ion batteries.

Mesoporous lithium titanate (LTO) nanoclusters are in situ synthesized in a network of super aligned carbon nanotubes (SACNTs) via a solution-based method followed by heat treatment in air. In the LTO-CNT composite, SACNTs not only serve as the skeleton to support a binder-free electrode, but also render the composite with high conductivity, flexibility, and mechanical strength. The homogeneous...
